Graduate Student Corner - Sindes Dawood
It’s hard to believe it, but summertime is coming to a close and the new academic school year has begun. Despite this bittersweet revelation, I speak on behalf of many SITAR graduate students when I say that this year’s conference at the Psychologische Hochsuchule in Berlin, Germany was a notable highlight of the summer. Graduate students gave many of the talks, and constituted a majority of the poster presentations. The research presentations given by both students and non-students were not only very interesting but also of high quality. It was a pleasure to learn so much from both new conference attendees as well as long-time SITAR members.
As is the tradition, after the Friday poster session, the graduate students walked to Parker & Bowles for good drinks and conversation before attending the conference dinner at 3 Schwestern. The social happy hour offered the perfect opportunity for students from European or North American universities to get to know each other better. Indeed, there were many good laughs, especially about cultural differences in everyday life, and, yes, the occasional spilled drink.
Every student I spoke to over the course of the conference weekend shared with me how impressed and thankful he or she was by how supportive SITAR members are toward student involvement in this organization, including the encouragement of student paper/poster presentations, offering student travel grants, and for presenting many opportunities for students to mingle with each other and non-students. Thus, thanks again SITAR members for providing ongoing support in the professional development of graduate students, and for making this conference experience a memorable one!
