Announcement from the Graduate Student Advisory Committee (GSAC) – Gentiana Sadikaj & Thane Erickson
The Graduate Student Advisory Committee (GSAC) wishes to express gratitude for the ongoing generosity of SITAR members in supporting the student travel award program. We greatly value our mission of supporting graduate student development, and believe that student attendance of the annual conference promotes productive dialogues, professional connections, and the dissemination of student research. One of the core goals of GSAC is to offset travel costs for as many graduate students as possible (we have not fully repressed memories of the financial challenges of graduate school!). Admittedly, SITAR is not able to fully cover the significant travel and registration costs of students, but we hope that by providing travel grants we thereby embody our mission of supporting graduate student development. With regard to the 2016 SITAR conference, a total of $1600 was raised, with $550 from members and $1,050 provided by SITAR. The nine student applicants each were awarded travel grants ranging from $150 to $300. Additionally, four students received $200 registration fee waivers. We express thanks to SITAR, the membership, and especially Dr. Patrick Markey for overseeing the donation process via PayPal account and for disbursing awards on behalf of the GSAC.
