A Message from SITAR President, Emily Ansell
SITAR President Emily Ansell
Yale University
It was another
exciting summer for SITAR. We were reminded again why Montreal proves to be one
of our most popular conference locations. Two excellent keynote speakers,
Jennifer Bartz and Mark Baldwin, opened each day of our packed conference line
up. New and old members attended and, as always, excellent questions and
discussions resulted from the innovative research presentations. At the
conference, Steve Strack stepped down from his tenure as Executive Officer. A
search was carried out last year by the Executive Council for a new EO and
Patrick Markey graciously accepted the offer.
Thank you Steve for everything you have given to this organization and
thank you to Patrick for agreeing to serve in this role. As a result of
stepping into the new EO role, Patrick will not be able to serve in the role of
Past President. In accordance with our bylaws, Martin Grosse Holtforth has
agreed to remain in the position for one more year.
We are also pleased to announce the results of this summer’s elections: Christopher Hopwood has been elected to serve as this year’s Vice President. As Chris moves into this role, he will step away from the role of newsletter editor. Chris has played an integral part in transitioning the newsletter to its new online format. This also means we are on the lookout for a new Editor of the newsletter. If you are interested in this position, please email me by November 15th.
In Sandro Sodano’s new role as President-Elect, he will also serve as the upcoming conference program chair. We are pleased to announce that the 2013 SITAR conference will be held May 31st and June 1st in Park City, Utah (see the Conference Announcement in this edition of the Newsletter). The conference will be held in conjunction with a festschrift on May 30th for one of SITAR’s first members, Lorna Smith Benjamin. Thank you to Tim Smith and the University of Utah Psychology Department for hosting SITAR in conjunction with the festschrift. Details are available in this edition of the newsletter and further information, including a 2013 conference website, will be posted soon. Not only will this conference offer the opportunity to experience the natural beauty of one of the “prettiest towns” in the United States (Forbes traveler Magazine, 2008) but we are also working to make this a very affordable conference to attend. We hope this will encourage a repeat of the record number of attendees last year. Please make your travel plans early to obtain the best airfare rates.
It occurs to me, as we thank Steve Strack for his 15 years of service and prepare to celebrate the retirement of a founding member of the society, that this is the year of SITAR generational transitions. I first attended SITAR as a graduate student and we now have an Executive Council comprised entirely of “2nd generation” members. I believe this reflects the efforts the organization has made to be inclusive of junior colleagues. Certainly, many of us on the EC note what an impact SITAR has had on our careers. I hope to see this effort continue with the growth of SITAR through prior graduate students now turned junior faculty. At the same time, we hope the tried and true membership continue to be a presence at conferences, that new members who have never heard of SITAR experience the communal nature of our group, and more students become full members after graduation so that our society can truly become a multi-generational interpersonal research family.
